As we enter the middle of the winter season, many of us find the cold, dark days can have a particularly large effect on our mood, not to mention making it particularly difficult to get out of bed each morning. The interior design of your bedroom will also have a part to play in how you wake up and feel each day, so it’s important the style and design of the room creates an environment in which to relax and enjoy.

With a few interior design changes, you can create the ideal winter bedroom, helping you to face the season ahead and banish yourself of those winter blues. So if you’re in an inspiring mood after the festive period and New Year, below are a few tips to create an inviting, homely bedroom environment, helping you to make the best of winter?

Creating a winter style for your bedroom

Furniture

If you live in a particularly cold area it’s best to think of nature when selecting colours for your winter bedroom. For the walls and ceiling it’s best to stick to light, neutral colours such as white or brown or silver, as this will help you sleep easier.

Bedroom decorations

Furniture

Of course there needs to be something in which to bring a sense of warmth and homeliness to the room. A range of candles can instantly create a welcoming atmosphere as well as providing a tranquil and peaceful environment.

For those who are longing for something more energetic, why not try using more vibrant colours for the decorations and bedding such as red or pink which can add warmth to the room as well as prolonging the festive cheer throughout the winter.

Furniture

Your bedroom furniture will most likely have the biggest impact on the room’s style and design so it’s vital you choose a material you’re happy with. For a winter themed room, oak wood provides the perfect and natural look for both traditional and contemporary bedrooms. Dark oak wood furniture can also provide your room with an alpine feel, while at the same time suitably fitting into almost any interior style.

Modern manufacturing processes for wooden sash windows are now among the most automated of manufacturing processes. It has only been in the last century that mass production has had any impact on sash windows at all. Window sashes before the early part of the 20 Th century were cut by hand.

Each sash was handmade and required hours of work and hours of training. Usually a single master craftsman would pass his skills on to one or more apprentices. They in turn would practice the proper construction and carving of the sash. It was a lengthy process.

Today, a cutting edge, modern factory can change sash specifications in a matter of minutes. Just a few key strokes can reprogram dozens of robotic stations to perform the same tasks that would have required hours to set up in factories only few decades old. Now employees learn computer programs rather than how to sharpen a cutting tool.

Mechanization has evolved rapidly. As early as 1900 there were mass production lines that tried to increase the production of sashes. They became increasingly automated as the century progressed. And now can include more robots than human workers.

While the need for individually produced wooden windows has decreased, it has not disappeared. Historical reproductions are in high demand. The National Registry of Historic Homes frowns on the use of modern materials and often requires the skills of an artisan.

Changing a sash profile is one of the most time consuming issues that modernization has be able to reduce. Instead of closing down a manufacturing line for days, a computerized program can shift the movable cutting knives in a modern plant in minutes. The entire production line can be ready in just a few hours or sometimes even less.

This kind of flexibility allows for quick turn -around times and as -needed shipping. That helps to keep the cost of manufacturing at a minimum. Efficiency increases have cut the amount of waste products that require handling as well. Robotic arms move faster than the eye can follow. Facility structures have grown from small craft buildings and guild halls to vast automated factories

Such flexibility and efficiency have transformed the cost of manufacturing and the availability of products around the world. From single blade cutting tools, handled by master craftsmen, the modern manufacturing processes for wooden sash windows have truly advanced. The future can only add to that upward trend. Robotics and automated warehousing will only increase the level of efficiency and product availability.

Do you think much about sash window companies? Sash windows London will help clean the windows and make them crystal clear today.

Bunk beds are the most popular type of bed used by kids and adults alike. These are a functional alternative to traditional beds especially to those families who have limited space to work such as the ones living in apartments. Theses beds allow one to take advantage of vertical space when horizontal space is no longer sufficient. Other than this, bunk beds also offer many benefits that users will definitely enjoy.

It is believe that bunk beds which are often used in ships, garrison, and prison cells have originated in Ancient Egypt. Egyptians used these as bed instead of the traditional make-shift piles of materials such as fur. Today, the improvements and remodeling made on the original loft beds made by Egyptians is evident on the bunk beds available in the market.

The bunk bed which is commonly a stock of two or more beds allows two people to sleep in the same room while maximizing the space. It has metal or wooden poles that connect the two beds which are called the bottom and the top bunk. In other countries bunk bed are also called loft beds or double decks. These have four corner posts that serve as support for the upper bed. Most bunk beds also include a ladder as an access to the top bunk and railing for the top bunk to prevent the sleeper from falling out of the bed. Other manufacturers of bunk bed also include a curtain for the bottom bunk for the people staying on it to have privacy, which is called the privacy curtain.

Bunk beds as in the case of other furniture in our homes have different types which can be chosen depending on ones preference. The most common type of this bed is the standard bunk bed which two same size beds stacked one over the other. Secondly, we have the L- shape bunk which has a bottom bed that oriented at a right angle to the top bed such that when viewed from above the beds form an L. Another popular type of this bed is the loft bed which only has a top bunk which allows for an open space underneath that can be occupied by a chest, drawers, or even a work area. Lastly we have the triple Wretham loft bed and triple Wretham loft bed + a Cougan which are arrangements of three and four bunks, respectively.

Among the numerous benefits one can get from bunk beds is its extreme flexibility. It is also very helpful in saving space inside the house. These are also perfect for children since they allow more space for kids to play around. Also, these bunk beds are best for adults and people staying and living in small studios and loft apartments which can help them save more space that can be used for other purposes.

Bunk beds are very practical piece of furniture to have inside a house. Aside from the numerous benefits one can get out of them they are also one great help in solving the problem of space inadequacy.

Regina Delaney is a teacher with three kids and lives in Germany. Even though they are living in quite a small place, Regina makes sure that her kids are still comfortable when sleeping by using an Etagenbett (the German term for “bunk bed”).

A WETT inspection will probably be required for any home that has a wood burning appliance. WETT stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer, and it involves making sure that a fireplace, woodstove and chimney in a home are up to code and safe. In addition to getting a WETT inspection before you buy a home, it is also important to get regular WETT inspections every year if your current home has a fireplace or woodstove in it.

Most Insurance Company’s require a WETT Inspection anytime a Wood Burning appliance is installed or when buying a new home. There are strict requirements that affect clearances that many older stoves and fireplaces will not meet.

In order to be a certified provider of WETT inspections, inspectors first have to go through a code compliance course to make sure they have the knowledge. Then they can choose to become a certified tech or advisor, earn their certification in chimney sweeping, or earn a WETT certification in SITE basic.

Complete inspection of any wood burning appliance involves an evaluation of every part of the heating system, from the floor pad to the chimney cap. All of these parts are covered in the codes, so compliance can only be determined if every part is inspected.

A WETT Certified Inspector will examine all parts of your wood stove and chimney looking at such items as the liner, the smoke chamber, damper, firebox and other working parts inside the fireplace or woodstove to make sure that they are working properly.

There is no actual process provided by WETT, so every inspector will have his own way of doing things. The inspection typically involves a visual inspection of everything, and if the inspector is concerned about anything he sees, then he will make a recommendation about the unit and whether any repairs are needed.

In Barrie Ontario the WETT Certified Professional of choice is wett-inspection.com whether for a wood stove, fireplace or pellet stove inspection. A professional inspection company that has been performing WETT inspections since 2005. Experience and knowledge do make a difference, so for peace of mind choose a reputable professional.

There comes a time in every ones life where the are going to require a wall built. Most men and some women are more than happy to tackle this task. A basic wall is only used to partition space and not used to support any structure or load.

Layout and mark the floor where you wall will be installed. Then mark in were the doors will be. Rough door openings are 2″ larger than the door size. A 32″ door would be framed in at 34″, this will allow enough room to place a pre-hung door and make it plumb.

The 2x4s are placed on “16-inch centers,” meaning that the center of one 2×4 is 16 inches away from the center of the next. In this wall, two things interrupt the consistent 16-inch pattern: Windows and any door openings that are required.

In many cases, it is acceptable by code to increase stud spacing from 16 inches to 24 inches on-center. The 1995 International Code Council’s One- and Two-Family Dwelling Code allows studs up to 10 feet long to be spaced up to 24 inches on-center. In walls supporting only a roof and ceiling, 2×4 studs can be spaced up to 24 inches on-center, except for Utility grade (No. 3) studs. For walls supporting one floor, such as non-bearing gable endwalls on the first floor of a 2-story house, 2x4s can be spaced up to 24 inches on-center when Utility grade studs are not used.

Structural headers are often oversized or installed where unnecessary, largely for convenience. Proper sizing of headers allows better insulation and saves wood. In some cases, single-ply (single 2×6, for example) headers can be used, allowing even better insulation around windows. Headers are not required in non-bearing walls, including most interior walls and gable endwalls with only non-bearing trusses directly above.

Always start nailing the corners, king studs, and cripples to the bottom plate first. Depending upon whether you’re right or left handed, start nailing on one end of the bottom plate and work you’re way to the other end nailing each component as you pass by.

Before removing any wall in a home the home owner should always check for plumbing or electrical wires in the wall. Although a wall may appear to be only a partition wall it is wise to double check in case someone foolishly used wall to support a previous project. If un-sure ask a home inspector to inspect wall and advise on its supporting structure.

If you enjoy using your fireplace but don’t like the associated energy costs, you might want to consider purchasing a fireplace insert. An insert is basically a wood stove designed to fit into a conventional open fireplace. Like wood stoves, new inserts must be EPA certified, making them clean burning and highly efficient.

Masonry chimneys. When chimney fires occur in masonry chimneys, the 2100 degree temperatures, and the extreme pressure’s that result, often crack the terra cotta clay flue tiles which line the chimney. Chimney fires are NO ordinary fires! They frequently melt dampers and chimney caps, and can actually “melt” mortar! Flue tiles expand until they crack when subjected to such extreme temperatures. These cracks then provide a pathway for flame under intense pressure to reach the combustible wood frame of the house. Enough heat can also be conducted through a perfectly sound chimney to ignite nearby combustibles. Even if a first chimney fire doesn’t seem to have harmed a home, the structure may be so weakened that a second fire will burn it down.

When an insert or hearth-mounted stove is installed in a fireplace, the installation shall be sealed to prevent the passage of room air into the chimney cavity or cavities. Inserts may need to be removed when the chimney is being cleaned and maintained. These appliances are heavy and awkward to handle. Removal is a often a job best left to a professional chimney sweep. In some cases, however, you do not have to remove the insert to clean the chimney. The insert can stay in place during cleaning if you install a full relining system, a stainless steel pipe that connects to the insert and goes to the top of the chimney.

The question often arises as to whether fireplace inserts can be installed in metal factory-built fireplaces. The answer is “yes and no”. In general, you cannot install EITHER a woodstove or a fireplace insert into an existing factory-built fireplace. The exception is only when the specific insert of stove model is “listed” for such application. This means that the sales brochure and the owners manual of the insert specially mentions and addresses installation into factory-built fireplaces.

Inserts must have a connector between the appliance outlet and the first section of the flue liner. This sends the smoke and gases up and out of the chimney more directly, minimizing combustible deposits that condense in the fireplace. Most fireplace insert installations will benefit from a full relining of the chimney, because the smaller pipe size will provide a better draft as well as an added margin of safety.

A permanent metal warning label shall be affixed to the rear wall of the fireplace (before the insert or hearth-mounted stove is installed) where it will be easily visible if the appliance is removed. This label shall warn the reader that the fireplace may have been altered to accommodate the appliance, and may be unsafe to use as a conventional fireplace.

The manner in which you store your firewood is very important when it comes to determining the viability of your wood. The ground is the worst place that you should store your firewood. Instead, opt for firewood racks.

First and foremost, if you want to season your wood, firewood racks are perfect because they will ensure proper circulation of air. Firewood racks will allow for portable usage and you will be able to keep choosing where to store your wood. Vermin and insects will also not attack your wood as when you store it on the ground.

Drying wood out slowly over time is called seasoning and it is best done in a firewood rack. It will give you advantages like less smoke when burning it in the house and more heat at the same time than unseasoned wood. The weight of the wood will also be greatly decreased and the wood will last in storage longer than usual.

The disadvantage of storing on the ground is that the wood will have no aeration. The bottom wood will also absorb moisture from the ground and the rest of the wood from the bottom wood. Firewood racks will come with vinyl covers to protect the wood from rain and snow.

Storing your wood on the ground is providing the perfect home for vermin like mice and snakes. To make matters worse, if the wood is very fresh, termites and insects will also infest it and spread into your house.

The ideal place to have your wood away from your major structures is 20-25 feet away. A portable firewood rack will solve this and still make it easy for you to transport your wood when you need it.

It is imperative that the firewood stays at a distance because of the risk of the termites spreading and eating your major structures.

Having firewood racks therefore gives you all these benefits of air circulation when seasoning, protection from harsh weather and vermin. Being portable will also prove to be a major advantage.

In addition to firewood storage, this writer additionally regularly publishes information regarding EZ up 10×10 canopy and 9×12 area rugs.

Residential decks can be constructed over steep areas or rough ground that is otherwise unusable. Decks can also be covered by a canopy or pergola to control sunlight. Deck designs can be found in numerous books, do-it-yourself magazines and web sites. In architecture, a deck is a flat surface capable of supporting weight, similar to a floor, but typically constructed outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and usually connected to a building. The term is a generalization of decks as found on ships.

Due to environmental concerns, composite decking (a mixture of two materials, typically wood pulp and recycled material such as plastic bottles or plastic bags) have appeared on the market. Proponents of composite decking have touted this as a much needed development as this helps to curb logging of trees for new decks. However composite decking has been found to contain harmful chemicals, cannot be refurbished, and despite claims from decking companies, the composite deck still attracts molding.

Many cities now require a building permit for any deck over a predetermined size, usually about a 100 square feet. Barrie ON has the following requirements in their bylaws. Decks and porches require building permits unless they are less than 10m2 (107ft2) in size and not attached to the building or located at an entrance.

Deck boards should be laid with the bark side up, and with both ends centered over a joist. Stagger the joints of side-by-side deck boards so they don’t line up. Notch the boards around posts or other obstructions, leaving 1/8″ space for drainage. Fasten the deck boards at each joist. Use two fasteners per support point for decking up to 6″ wide, or three fasteners for wider boards. Deck screws or clips are generally better than nails, but all fasteners must be hot-dipped galvanized, aluminum, or stainless steel

Attaching your deck to your house is typically done with lag bolts or through bolts. This connection is typically made into the band joist or rim joist area of the homes floor system. Lag screws or bolts should be staggered vertically, placed at least 2 inches from the bottom or top, and 5 inches from the ends of the ledger board. Some codes permit the lag screws or bolts to be as close as 2 inches from the ends of the ledger board; however, avoiding the very ends of the ledger boards minimizes splitting from load stress.

If you are notching some of the supporting members there are some basic rules you have to follow concerning notching. Notches must be less than one-quarter the depth of the member. On the tension and compression faces, the notch depth must be less than one-sixth of the member’s depth, and the notch length must be less than one-third of the member’s depth. Notches are not permitted in the middle third of spans, or on the tension face of members that are greater than 3 inches thick.

In Canada any openings through guards in a deck which is more than 23 5/8 inches above grade shall be of a size that will prevent the passage of a spherical object having a diameter of 100 mm, unless it can be shown that it will not represent a hazard.

The NEC requires an electrical outlet on any deck over 20 square feet in size. The receptacle’s faceplate must rest securely on the supporting surface to prevent moisture from entering the enclosure. If the receptacle is installed on uneven surfaces, such as stucco, stone or brick, a caulking compound can be used to fill in gaps. All 15- and 20-amp, 120/240-volt receptacles installed outdoors must have a weatherproof enclosure. These receptacles must also have a while-in-use cover. GFCI protection is required for all exterior receptacles.

The Barrie Home Inspector is a Certified Building Code Official who has completed all the required Part 9 and Part 3 Ontario Building Code courses which includes residential decks. As a Certified Home Inspector this assures your home will be inspected by someone with the knowledge and experience to ensure that will have “Peace of Mind” when making your next Real Estate purchase.

Cheap wood flooring is something that many are now after. It helps brighten up a room, while also offering a modern look to the home. Real wood is very expensive and needs plenty of upkeep, but faux wood works extremely well.

Laminate flooring is usually the first thought when looking for cheap options. It can give a nice look but offer advantages of being warmer and inexpensive. You may also want to consider faux material for your floor, which will also be much cheaper than traditional material. However, there is a type of real floor that could fit your budget.

Something that you are likely to come across is engineer type. This is when thin pieces are layered to make one plank, which makes it more stable. There are usually around four layers used in each board and the top one is usually made of a real material. This will mean that it can be sanded down so it is easily maintained, especially when it gets scuffed.

Engineer type offers a number of benefits including the fact that it is warmer. The problem with real type is that it changes temperature rapidly when the home does. However, the extra layers in the engineer wood stop that from happening. The finish offers a better look than opting for laminate floor, which is definitely something to take into consideration.

However, there are some disadvantages to be aware of. This is not the cheapest option that you will find for your home. Laminate costs much less and is often the better option when on a tight budget. You cannot lay the material in every room. The problem with damp rooms is that it sets in the material, which will end up rotting and breaking away. This is usually in bathrooms or anywhere that is susceptible to water.

This material, even engineer type, is noisy. Any footstep will resonate around the room. This can be countered through the use of rugs in a room, which also helps with keeping the room a little warmer. However, you will need to think carefully about placing the material on stairs. You will not be able to counter the noise and it will be tricky to lay.

It is worth spending some time to look around for the different types of cheap wood flooring and finding out about lots of them. Take your time to work out the pros and cons of each type and then look at where you want to place them in your home. This material does look great however there are some rooms that will benefit from tiles or laminate flooring instead.

Ralph writes more about UK flooring suppliers – with information on different types such as cheap ash flooring and oak flooring – at cheapwoodflooring.co.uk.

Cutting boards have been introduced in the kitchens because they serve as good useful tools for cutting and chopping foods on their hard surface.

Cutting boards have been introduced in the kitchens because they serve as good useful tools for cutting and chopping foods on their hard surface.

The second reason is that they are a means of protection to the beautiful kitchen counters as the job of cutting and chopping up food is going on. They will easily provide the hard surface you require to support and hold the foodstuff as you cut it. So it keeps the counter tops clean and without germs.

Now you understand why the homes that have allowed their kitchen counters to be used arbitrarily for chopping and cutting purposes without any protection at all; will pay dearly. It will come when they realize how this business can make those surfaces ugly and unsightly.

This form of renovation is really not very affordable and should simply be avoided by introducing the use of cutting boards in your kitchen. Just choose between the plastic and wooden ones.

Experienced chefs have the habit of choosing wooden boards but this will really require rigorous maintenance if this is your choice too.

Wood can warp and split easily if not well taken care of. The plastic is preferable in this case because it can also do the job quite well. Glass is seen as the worst idea when thinking of getting a cutting board for it is too hard.

Most people want to protect their kitchen counters but they forget that even the cutting knives need protection from arbitrary damage and blunt disfiguring if used on surfaces that are too hard.

It is recommended that cutting boards when disinfected satisfactorily using natural bleach which is commonly used in the home, the vinegar, can do very fine. It is good to mix vinegar with water which forms a disinfectant that is useful in the home for all surfaces including the counter tops.
