The team representing Brigham Young University of Provo, Utah is the Cougars. They are members of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision which participates in the Mountain West Conference. Of these conferences, the Cougars have won 23 and they have, additionally played in 28 post-season bowl games. In 1984 the team bagged the national championship in football.
Football did not get a foothold in Brigham until 1922. Previous to that, the school had introduced football in 1896 but the game was soon forgotten. In 1922, the school tried to revive the sport but its team did not make any significant progress or achievements. The change came when, in 1928, the school hired Mr. G. Ott Romney to coach the team. Under his coaching the team experienced its first small successes.
The span of time before the outbreak of the war saw the team making great improvement. They became recognized in the sporting world to some extent. 1932 was the first year that the team registered an overall win of 188-50, dominating its opponents for that year. In 1942, it finally managed to defeat the University of Utah, to whom it had repeatedly lost in the past.
The team had its first consecutive (back-to-back) victories in their division in 1957 and 1958. Their successes brought enthusiasm and community support with it and the home stadium was finished in 1964 with a seating capacity of 30,000. The team was honored with its first All-American player in 1961. The player was Eldon “The Phantom” Fortie, a running back.
There was a dramatic change in the stature of the team after they won their first conference championship in 1965. They were then being coached by Tommy Hudspeth. Three more winning seasons would be enjoyed by the team before Mr. Hudspeth retired.
Under the succeeding coach, Lavell Edwards, the Cougars experienced their heyday. Their victories were almost continuous in the WAC during that period. However, their performance in the bowl games was not as satisfactory
The peak of the teams power came in 1996 and lasted for the term of Coach Edward. Upon his retirement, things took a bad turn and the team experienced nothing but losses with Edward’s replacement. The new coach quit his job after a brief time.
Despite their partial recovery from the slump in their performance from 2001 – 2004, the Cougars have not regained the effectiveness they had with coach Edwards. However, they have made considerable improvement as witnessed by their performance in the last years.
The team is multi-awarded. Among the distinctions they have received are the National Championship Award, the Doak Walker Award, the Outland Award, the College Football Performance Award and the Heisman Trophy. The team has also received recognition for the coaching skills of Lavell Edwards. They received the Amos Alonzo Stag Award, the AFCA(Koadk) Coach of the Year Award and the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.
If we are to judge by the team’s present performance, we can expect that they are really on their way to making a spectacular comeback.
