The cue ball is sitting in the corner pocket and the ball I am shooting at, the object ball, is sitting in the opposite corner pocket on the same short rail. There are several other pool balls in between, so a three rail shot is necessary to make the object ball in the corner pocket. Say the end of the table where I am standing (where the cue ball and object ball are) is the head, the other end is the foot.
However, the basement seems to always be the first place people think of when planning to set up a billiards room in their home. Three important questions to ask: Is there a bathroom down there? If you have kids will they ever see you again because you are always in the basement and how will you monitor them from there? Is the cement floor well padded and carpeted for hours of walking around the pool table? This may be the only place in your house you have an extra room and it could be a very good choice. A couple of good reasons would be privacy for serious practice and playing your music loud and the neighbors won’t hear it as much.
The size of the room will dictate several things, the size of your billiards table, the length of billiards cue you will be able to use, how much room you have for seating, (which could be two cool padded bar stools with padded arms and a love seat) and where your electronics will go. You will need a TV/DVD player to play your instructional and fun pool billiards videos, a stereo, and a karaoke machine (I had one in my pool room).
Because it is a long rail, shoot through the diamond. This means drawing an imaginary line going through diamond #3 and shooting at that spot on the edge of the rail that lies along the imaginary line to the diamond. Remember, on long rails shoot through the diamond, on short rails shoot on the diamond. Last of all, shoot hard because it has to hit three rails and have enough momentum left to contact the object ball (be careful not to miscue).
In summary, its a place where the sights, sounds and people are familiar and welcoming. The sight of the billiards tables all lined up in rows, the sound of the breaking of the pool balls, and everyone greeting each other and exchanging tips and tricks and joking around and razzing each other about past blunders or recalling past victories and amazing shots. The interaction among billiards pool players is really cool and I am really glad to be one of them! After going a few times I noticed that just like most places, the people there all know each other and now they know me too, which makes it my favorite Billiards Parlor.
